Research and Investigation
My initial idea was to have a narrative where there is a map, perhaps lost, which says where to find all these creatures. However, as time progresses, I grew bored of my idea and taught of a Book of Monsters instead. What if, this book introduces the mythical creatures, which is part of a game or even an alternate universe like Sword Art Online, where these monsters can be defeated. This book acts like a cheat sheet, like those like Pokemon Guide that the stores sell. However, this book is lost and these pages that I am going to create are the ones that are found.
I researched about the different animals that can aid with my forming the mythical creatures. Using deconstruction which was taught in one of the previous workshops, I can effectively use different parts of the animals to form the mythical creature I want. After which, I also looked at the different prospects and ideas that others had came up with when doing up mythical creatures.
Ideation and Exploration
I was exploring the different types of monsters and how it can presented in these two images above. I was looking at how these monsters can differ - from mythical creatures to monsters that represent mental diseases. It is interesting to note that these images all turns out to be rather fantastical and surrealistic. Somehow, the ones above does not really convey the idea of playing a virtual game.
Composition
Composition, like Prof Nancy had once mentioned in lecture, is important when it comes to art-making. Looking at composition will allow the audience to comprehend the idea better and perhaps make it more convincing. It will also allow me to visualise my idea more.
Final
After painting the mythical creatures and adding in the words, the entire effect of the lost books is not there. The typography has been miscalculated as the words look too much handwritten (my own) and the tone of the seriousness and mystical has been lost. What's more, but just have one side to the pages does not seem like the pages are from a book; after all, books are usually printed on both sides. Furthermore, there is no clear narrative linking all the pages.
