Negative space is, quite simply, the space that surrounds an object in a image. Just as important as that object itself,negative space helps to define the boundaries of positive space and brings balance to a composition.
Some examples of negative and positive spaces:
Personally, I felt that the FedEx logo is one of the best examples for negative and positive space.
It was interesting how Chiaroscuro and Tenebrism was in the lecture as well. I guess the use of light and dark allows the audience to see the dark as negative space and the focal point as positive space.
